Only a few months into 2017, we’ve already zeroed in on the hottest strains of the year. They are new, they are bold, and some of them refocus the attention given only to high-THC strains and allow other qualities to shine through. Unfortunately, some of them are too new to be reliably stocked everywhere but suggest keeping an eye out for these crowd-pleasing new strains because they will eventually end up at a dispensary near you.
1. Strawberry Banana
Strawberry Banana is what happens when the masters at DNA Genetics collaborate with Serious Seeds—one of the strongest strains in the world with one of the most unassuming names ever. The hype for Strawberry Banana started in 2014 when it took a prize at the Los Angeles High Times Cannabis Cup, and its rise to fame has been a long, slow-burning one. In 2017, when the political and social world seems to be on fire, the sweet smell and ultra-potent sedation of Strawberry Banana strain are just what the doctor ordered.
2. Gorilla Glue #5
Gorilla Glue #4 is “so 2016” so it’s a good thing that GG Strains came up with an even more potent hybrid. It’s a cross between Gorilla Glue #1 and Gorilla Glue #4 phenotypes (get it’s 1+4=5) that will leave you so relaxed you’ll be “glued” to the couch. Gorilla Glue #5 delivers stupefying effects that aid in sleep disorders, muscle relaxation, and relief from chronic pain and PTSD.
3. Blackberry Dream
Blackberry Dream is not part of the Blue Dream family, but it’s not too far off because it has the Super Silver Haze lineage, crossed with Kimbo Kush. This generous plant produces heavy yields of glittering emerald-colored buds that reek of blackberry jam and some spices that remind us a little of Pink Kush. Start low and slow with Blackberry Dream because the sativa-dominant effects quickly become much more sedative with heavier doses.
Burkle took 3rd place in the “Best Indica” competition at the 2016 High Times Cannabis Cup in Colorado, and now it’s available to the masses. This cross between Bubba Kush and Granddaddy Purple, this strain is a heavy-hitting indica with about 19% THC and more sleep-inducing power than just about any other marijuana flower on this list. It may not seem like a high dose of THC compared to others, but the effects indicate otherwise. Just be careful because it is known to bring on headaches in some users.
5. Golden Lemons
The name may make you think of which sativa strains birthed this 23% THC heavy-hitter, but actually, Golden Lemons is 60% indica hybrid that just happens to have the intense citrus nose
of something like Super Lemon Haze or Sour Diesel. Its heritage is a cross between Jew Gold Cut and Lemon Skunk, giving this flower significant relaxation power and a bright, punchy scent.
6. Red Dragon
Red Dragon is one of the most powerful sativa-dominant hybrids that the last year has produced. It is super exotic, giggly and sociable, which makes it a great group session strain and the sweet, musky fruit scent and taste makes it even more pleasurable. If you like Super Kush but wish that it had a little more oomph, then you’ll dig this scrumptious herb.
7. Sour Kush
When it comes to cannabis, it’s no longer a race to see which genetic creation boasts the highest cannabinoid content, but if it were, then Sour Kush from DNA Genetics, with up to 30% THC, would be an elite athlete. This strain is not for the faint of heart, though it is for those who require deep relaxation and pain relief. Just run a marathon, or having trouble sleeping? Have a puff of Sour Kush, and we’ll see you in a couple of days.
8. Lemonhead OG
Sometimes, you just need something to lift you up before a night out; something sociable and uplifting with a moderate hit of THC. Say hello to your ally in the fight to stay perky all night, Lemonhead OG. You will appreciate the zesty lemon taste and the energetic pick-me-up this happy sativa delivers.
9. Blue Magoo
Dynasty Seeds has taken the sweet-smelling relief of Blueberry and crossed it with William’s Wonder F2 to create a moderately heady flower that occasional users and daytime medicators will thoroughly enjoy. If you love the effects of Blue Dream but want to try something different, Blue Magoo will lift you in many of the same ways. We highly recommend this one if you like to indulge in cannabis pre-workout.
10. Aliens on Moonshine
These days you can’t have a complete “best of” strain list without paying homage to a nice and easy CBD-rich phenotype, and this one from Sin City Seeds is a stellar example. Sour Alien crossed meets White Moonshine in this indica-dominant 5:1 CBD/THC strain. Aliens On Moonshine is a semi-potent medicinal flower that won’t hamper your productivity; it’s relaxing, and inflammation-busting effects can be dialed up with a heavier does if you need some dedicated pain relief on top of the mood-stabilizing effects.
