Athletes’ bodies can take quite the beating, and as a result, they have one of the highest addiction rates to pharmaceuticals of any profession. The most common line of treatment for athletes experiencing pain and discomfort is prescription drugs. Oxycontin, tramadol, and all kinds of other cocktails are waiting on the sidelines with horrible side effects, addiction and even the risk of death.
There is a natural and safer alternative that many professional athletes are turning to, cannabis. As a result, many retired and current professional athletes are finding relief from pain, inflammation and many other ailments which are a direct consequence of their physical profession.
Finding Relief In A Leaf
Although most would consider being a professional athlete as a dream job, many athletes are suffering from conditions such as addiction, physical ailments, and mental health issues upon retirement. Instead of killing their bodies with dangerous pharmaceuticals, athletes are now opting for a natural approach to pain management and overall health care through cannabinoid therapies.
Some pros are turning to THC and full spectrum cannabis-derived products, while others are opting for products that are high in CBD because of their legality. Additionally, many athletic associations still enforce bans on cannabis consumption by players. This is despite there being comprehensive medical cannabis programs operational in nearly half of the U.S. and full legalization in Canada.
Change Is Coming
Luckily, as the legalization and normalization of cannabis progress, organizations such as the NFL, NHL and NBA will have to address their policies surrounding cannabis. This will hopefully usher in a new era where all athletes can utilize a plant for relief without the stigma or fear of it risking their career.
