Cannabis is going mainstream. This is something that you cannot deny. From Oscar swag bags and Times Square on NYE to sport league sponsorships cannabis is showing up everywhere today. Could it soon be coming to a grocery store near you? According to a recent interview with the 65-year old CEO of Whole Foods John Mackey, it’s definitely a possibility. While you can go into just about any grocery store chain such as Walmart and find hemp seed and hemp seed oil, there’s not a single state in the U.S that allows for grocery stores to sell medicinal or recreational cannabis. According to the Mackey, however, this could change in the future.
Could Whole Foods Be Next?
That’s right. Soon you could be purchasing your gluten-free flour, dairy-free butter, and cheese as well as organic craft-grown cannabis all in the same place. This isn’t something that’s going to happen overnight, and Mackey who is also the co-founder of Whole Foods is well aware of this. Here is a statement from his recent interview with the Texas Tribune.
“If cannabis is ever passed in Texas, chances are good that grocery stores will be selling that, too.” He then went on to state “Let’s see what happens with the market and the government regulations over time” in regard to a question about pot-laced brownies on the shelves.
What Would It Take?
While many of us would love to make grocery shopping and re’ing up a one-stop shop, it will take quite a change before this happens. There are also many questions that would need to be addressed. Questions such as, would children still be allowed in Whole Foods? Would there need to be increased security? Would the typical zone restrictions that apply to dispensaries apply to Whole Foods as well? These are just the tip of the iceberg.
For Whole Foods to be able to sell cannabis-based products that contain high levels of THC, a change would be necessary at the federal level. The Texas-based chain, however, could theoretically get into the green business in states with legal recreational markets if they were able to find a way to stay in compliance with the local laws.
Not An Unheard Concept
Selling weed in a grocery store? REALLY? Yes, REALLY! In fact, several Canadian grocery stores are already doing just that. Such as Loblaw Companies Limited, one of Canadas largest supermarket chains which entered into the cannabis supply chain in 2018. So, the people in the U.S and around the world can only hope that one day this dream becomes a reality for them as well!
