It’s finally official – hemp is legal in the United States of America!
Yesterday, President Donald Trump put his signature on the 2018 Farm Bill. US Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell championed a bill that removed hemp from the Controlled Substance Act. Now that hemp is legal in America the doors for research and global trade have been opened. Canadian cannabis company Canopy Growth is already entering the US cannabis space via the hemp industry. The language within the 2018 Farm Bill defines Cannabis sativa l as hemp as long as it has less than 0.3% of THC when measured by dry weight.
Hemp Removed from the CSA
By removing hemp from the Controlled Substance Act, it is now legal for anyone and everyone to participate in growing and selling hemp in America. It will take a short time for the specific details of the regulations to come about, but this is what is expected. The United States Department of Agriculture will be the ones in charge of articulating the regulations pertaining to hemp, hemp licenses, hemp cultivators and lab testing for hemp.
Hope for American Farmers
Justin Strekal who is NORML’s political director said: “These changes represent a significant and long-overdue shift in US policy.” American farmers have been feeling the effects of the tariff war between the United States and China. Crops such as soy, wheat, and corn have been hit hard hurting American farmers. The signing of the 2018 Farm Bill gives hope to American farmers to help repair their devastated bank accounts, as well as to help repair their farmland. As it was, China controlled an estimated 50% of the global hemp supply.
The U.S. to Join the Global Hemp Trade
With hemp being legalized across the United States of America, it looks like there’s a new player in the hemp sector. You can expect to see hemp clothing become more readily available along with products such as building materials. CBD infused products will also see a price drop as more hemp begins to flood the market.
A big thank you goes to the thousands of advocates and activists that have dedicated their lives in helping make this day possible!
