With new studies coming out all the time regarding extracts, every day dabbers continue turning to rosin instead of other popular oils and wax. This is because it is solvent free, and rumored to be downright more delicious. This ‘squish’ method is completely solventless, and now Porter and the team at Rawzn are refining this clean, tasty product even further by squishing Live Rosin. Porter actually made some time to talk to us about how he got started and where he intends to go with this technique.
While with extractions a solvent is used to strip the plant matter of cannabinoids, rosin simply uses heat and pressure to get all the good stuff out. It was about three years ago that Porter began working to build his own rosin press. He ordered specialty stainless steel discs outfitted with heating elements from online retailer New Vape and then attached them to a shop press. Fast forward to today and Porter is at the helm of the live rosin movement with the team at Canadian wax company Rawzn. The premise of his journey: help other people create their own solventless dabs at home.
“My rosin journey was tough, I had to find everything out by myself. I found out early on that a lot of people in the cannabis industry hold back knowledge. That’s one thing I’m completely against. If I’m doing something new and revolutionary I’m going to tell you how I’m doing it so that we can all do revolutionary things.” articulated S. Porter while speaking with us one-on-one recently.
But why rosin? And even further, why live rosin? Well, as we discussed in our previous post on live resin; these products are extracted (or in this case, squished) using product that has neither been dried or cured. This practice helps preserve the terpene content, which slowly degrades throughout these post-harvest processes. The difference between the two ‘Live’ products is that live resin still goes through the hydrocarbon extraction process, while Live Rosin doesn’t touch a solvent at any point in the manufacturing process.
The result is a product with less of a harsh feeling in the throat and lungs. According to Porter, after about one month of exclusively dabbing rosin he decided to try some BHO. The tight, uncomfortable feeling that he experienced in his chest was a huge signal: this was not how he wanted to be smoking cannabis. From his experience, Porter finds Live Rosin makes for smoother, tastier dabs. With less abrasive entities coming into contact with the plant from the start, it is also probable that Live Rosin is a more direct interpretation of the plant’s compounds.
Make Live Rosin the Rawzn Way
As mentioned, it’s a mission of Porter’s to help spread the knowledge of how these loud solventless dabs are made. Part of that is done through his work with distributor Mash710, teaching people how to use optimally use the machines and their various components. To make Live Rosin, the team at Rawzn uses 4-5 grams of bubble hash each run. To start they put bubble hash made with fresh, uncured flower into a 25-micron bag. This can result with a return of 50-85% on the amount of product squished. Do keep in mind that these yield numbers vary greatly depending on the quality of what we’re pressing.
When it’s time to squish, Porter recommends preheating the plates to about 185-190°C for flower and 110-160°C for hash. After the plates are heated, put the bags under pressure and slowly ramp it up for 1 to 1.5 minutes. We will know that the concentrate is finished when the oils begin to emerge from the plates.
Rosin is known as an easy to make, easy on the lungs dabbable product and Live Rosin takes that already popular product, and makes it even tastier.
