Marijuana, the slang term widely used to describe a very misunderstood plant known as cannabis, remains illegal across much of the globe. However, cannabis legalization is gaining support and views about this plant are starting to change. Certain locations across Europe are said to tolerate a personal amount of cannabis but, by all means, it is illegal spanning the majority of the continent.
Portugal, Ireland, Slovenia, Spain, Bulgaria, Italy, Belgium and the Czech Republic are a few of the countries that minor possession most likely will not land you punishment. Possession in Cyprus, Sweden, Finland, Hungary and Greece, on the other hand, could land you in the slammer. Cannabis possession in any amount in these countries often leads to prison time.
Go to the Netherlands and cannabis has been decriminalized. It’s only under specific conditions and circumstances that someone can be prosecuted here. Government officials in the Netherlands decided to not allow tourists in the 200 + coffee shops that offer cannabis. Luckily, Eberhard van der Laan however, changed all of that by removing the ban.
Now coffee shops throughout the Netherlands are experiencing a surge in demand thanks to, “marijuana lite” which references high-CBD cannabis. This is making some growers and cultivators focus on even lower amounts of THC.

The result is thick resinous buds full of terps. These buds are full of CBD while having minuscule amounts of THC. Golden Green is an extremely popular strain of marijuana lite containing 0.6% THC and 15% CBD.
In Switzerland, hemp is legal as long as it has less than 1% THC. Across much of Europe hemp with less than 0.2% THC can be transported across borders without having any repercussions from customs. This is creating a market where Swiss “marijuana lite” manufacturers are cultivating products and shipping them to Italy, France, and the UK.
Sergio, a managing director for Cannical, a Swiss company that produces “marijuana lite” was quoted in VICE saying, “you can’t really tell the difference between our product and the illegal street product—the buds are covered with many trichomes, and they are grown organically and tested.”
Consumers of “marijuana lite” report feeling relief from aches and pains, as well as a feeling of relaxation without the disorientation of a head-high. These high-CBD cannabis flowers are not only being smoked, but some consumers are opting to infuse them into foods and beverages at home as well.
