One of the main cannabinoids present in cannabis, Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol or tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA), has recently been found to have neuroprotective qualities.
THCA is non-psychoactive and is the biosynthetic precursor of THC but has radically different properties. The chemical reaction to THC takes place when fresh cannabis buds are dried and cured, but also, and much quicker, when you expose cannabis to heat. Heating to 180-220◦F is sufficient to cause decarboxylation to THC.
A study published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information has revealed its potential as a neuroprotective agent. In the study, neuroprotective activity of Δ9-THCA was investigated in mice and the results showed that both cannabinoids THC and THCA protect dopaminergic neurons against induced cell death.
The study was able to show that THCA helps prevent the death of cells important to neurological functioning. This is a huge step towards effective therapies for neurodegenerative disorders. As the study states “Δ9-THCA shows potent neuroprotective activity, worth consideration for the treatment of Huntington’s Disease and possibly other neurodegenerative and neuroinflammatory diseases.” This information could lead to successful treatment for other neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease, and even multiple sclerosis.
In addition to its neuroprotective qualities, THCA is also Anti-inflammatory, decreases nausea, and has been found in some studies to fight prostate cancer. This cannabinoid has the potential to treat a number of different ailments such as autoimmune disorders, digestive issues like IBS and as mentioned above, cancer.
The most effective way of obtaining high doses of THCA is to juice raw cannabis. The juice can be consumed on its own, in tinctures, capsules, or even mixed into a smoothie! The health benefits of raw cannabis have been promoted for years by cannabis patients, but the recent studies on it have provided some solid evidence as to why. Maybe it’s time for more people to consider juicing and drinking raw cannabis, it may just work wonders!
