In December 2018 hemp became legal for the first time in over eight decades in the United States. Many people are aware of the agricultural and medical benefits that hemp has to offer. Many people, however, are unaware of just how many things can be made from hemp. I’m not just talking about hemp jewelry or hemp clothes either. A prime example of something that can be made with is in the new 718 Cayman GT4 racer that was just released by Porsche.
The Hempsational Details
This vehicle is made with natural fiber composite body panels which include hemp composites. This material is much like traditional carbon composites. Hemp however, is much lighter and very durable. Hemp is super strong, better for the planet and can take on water, unlike carbon fibers.
The 718 Cayman GT4 hemp car from Porsche is a total of 2910 lb. It is powered by 3.8 L flat 6 which can obtain 425 horsepower. The 718 Cayman GT4 is complete with 380 mm disc brakes on all four axles. This is to help calm its speed when needed. It also comes with the ability to turn off ABS, TC and ESC features. Also, if you would prefer you can purchase optional items such as an 80 liter fuel-cell, a rescue hatch in the roof and a handheld fire extinguisher. There is also a competition model that comes with adjustable shocks, adjustable brake bias, a quick release steering wheel, an automatic fire extinguishing system, and integrated air jack system, and 30 extra liters of fuel.
This Isn’t the First Car Made with Hemp Fibers
Too many people’s surprise this isn’t the first automobile that has been built with hemp components. The first hemp car that was ever built was by Henry Ford back in 1941. Since then several other individuals and companies have manufactured cars and even plane parts utilizing hemp fibers. In comparison to cutting down our forests, exhausting our natural resources, and depleting the health of our planet hemp could be used to make everything that wood and plastic currently does. Not only is it better for us as humans it is also better for our environment.
With the cultivation of hemp now legal in the United States many people expect for the hemp market to grow substantially in the years to come. This should be a direct result of more products being made from hemp all the way from clothing and building materials to cars.
