Could cannabis actually help protect the damage alcohol does to our stomach? Questions like these are surfacing more and more these days. Cannabis has zero recorded deaths linked directly to it. However, the same is not true when it comes to alcohol.
Alcohol has fatalities linked directly to it. Additionally, it has a series of medical conditions that can be caused by it. For example, one of those medical conditions is alcoholic gastritis. This particular condition is a superficial erosive disease of the stomach according to a study on the NCBI. The study is titled “Reduced Prevalence of Alcoholic Gastritis in Hospitalized Individuals Who Consume Cannabis.”
In this study, the question of cannabis consumption as well as its ability to suppress gastric acidity comes up. Unfortunately, there have not been studies to look at the impact or effectiveness of cannabis to help treat alcoholic gastritis.
The Statistics of Alcoholic Gastritis
Utilizing a complex method researchers figured out a way to measure the risk in someone contracting alcoholic gastritis. In particularly, they were able to measure the “adjusted relative” risk. They factored in the prevalence of frequent cannabis users. By doing so, they determined that cannabis resulted in a decreased probability of alcoholic gastritis. Further studies into medical conditions such as this could open doors for treating not only alcoholic gastritis, but other forms of gastritis as well.
Cannabis Helping You to Drink Less
One way that cannabis might help someone who has an alcohol problem is by helping them to drink less. Often cannabis induces cases of the munchies and giggles followed by feelings of relaxation and euphoria. It’s not uncommon for someone to be out drinking and partake in smoking a joint. Afterward, many find themselves drinking less.
Many times these individuals find themselves calling it a night shortly afterward. This versus the option and alternative of continuing to drink more and party later into the night. By simply helping to reduce the amount of alcohol drunk cannabis is helping. Imagine if these studies took place in-depth controlled environments by medical professionals utilizing human subjects. The breakthroughs that we could see are almost endless it seems.
