In the last few years, the media got ahold of information on a cannabinoid known as tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCv). In high doses, THCv actually accentuates the euphoria of fellow cannabinoid THC. The effects are clear headed and anti-anxiety, but the reason everyone is hunting down THCv is because it has shown to dull the appetite. Because of this, patients using cannabis for anorexia or appetite loss should avoid these strains. On the other hand, someone looking to smoke some herb without enjoying an entire cake afterward will appreciate these cannabis cultivars. While not all of the below strains have test results showing high levels of THCv, we can assure you that we have beta tested each for their lack of munchie potential.
With its trademark aroma of fresh, vibrant strawberries and the uplifting, creative effects, Strawberry Cough is a favorite cultivar for many. Prepare to complete your latest watercolor with immense focus or clean up the kitchen with wild abandon; getting things done is possible with this fruity cannabis strain. Something that it doesn’t incite, at least for us, is a case of the munchies.
This South African landrace cultivar is known for its pure Sativa effects and delectably lemony scent with a trademark hint of mint in the finish. Durban Poison is one of the few cannabis strains that always comes back from the testing lab with high levels of THCv. The anxiety relieving, 100% Sativa is coveted for more than just its ability to keep voracious hunger at bay; but that is one of its more unique features.
Ace of Spades
Combining citrus and earthiness, the unique genetics of Ace of Spades make it a memorable cultivar. This strain combines Black Cherry Soda and Jack the Ripper to create a relaxed effect that is complimented by an uplifting, euphoric focus. Though it does feel predominantly like a sativa, Ace of Spades can actually be valuable for relieving symptoms of pain. The high levels of THC can cause paranoia or anxiety in some but so be aware of side effects; whether they’re negative or positive.
For more than five years of budtending in three different states in the US, I’ve never seen Doug’s Varin in person. However, I have read many articles about the strain that tests with a whopping 15% THCv. Effects will be heavily cerebral, energetic and filled with happiness. The aroma and flavors are earthy with a lemony pine finish.
Focused, energetic, and productive are a few ways that we’d describe the effects of Amnesia. As with most Sativa strains, Amnesia has a vivid citrus aroma and flavor. The genetics of this strain are disputed among some of the world’s top growers. But something that we can all agree upon is that we can get blitzed on Amnesia without the unnecessary urge to hit the fridge.
Sour Diesel is a Sativa cannabis cultivar that exists in the back genetics in quite of few of our favorite strains. It has a distinct smell of dirt and gasoline that some find absolutely intoxicating. The very grounded, focused, and engaged effects of Sour Diesel make it a Sativa strain that even new smokers will appreciate. While it does excite all of our brain, it does not incite a french fry fest; which is why we’ve added it to this little list.
Super Silver Haze
Much like Sour Diesel, some of these strains have Super Silver Haze in their back genetics. Unlike Diesel, Haze delivers a fresh, sunny aroma. This cultivar is also known for its sky high levels of THC and as such, it is also known for its heavily cerebral effects. It can be more psychedelic than Sour Diesel, but as promised, it doesn’t make us get the sudden urge to smash a pizza.
For those looking for strains that are naturally high in the cannabinoid THCv, you should look to find flowers with back genetics of Durban Poison, Ace of Spades, and Doug’s Varin.
