When it comes to Canadian cannabis consumers, they’re not the only thing high in Canada these days. It seems the prices on cannabis and cannabis products are increasingly becoming more expensive. The high price of getting high has grown even higher on the financial side since cannabis legalization took place in Canada back on October 17th of 2018. You can find many different stories on various media outlets discussing the Canadian cannabis black market and legal industry. One of the goals of legal cannabis in Canada was to crush out the black market.
Higher Prices For Cannabis In Canada
Recent statistics reported show that cannabis is more expensive legally than it is on the black market with some reports suggesting prices are as much as 50% higher on the legal side. The black market in Canada appears to be capitalizing on government-operated cannabis facilities lack of ability to keep up with the demand along with selling cannabis at much lower pricing. Statistics Canada estimates that legal cannabis prices have seen an increase of 17% since legalization.
Here is the average breakdown on prices per gram in regulated stores in each province.
- Northwest Territories $14.15 per gram
- New Brunswick $8.27 per gram
- Manitoba $9.14 per gram
- Quebec at $6.75 per gram
- Ontario $8.05 per gram
- Alberta $9.07 per gram
- BC $7.15 per gram
- Nova Scotia $8.73 per gram
- Prince Edward Island $7.69 per gram
- Saskatchewan $8.02 per gram
“When the government tries to restrict and limit access, they increase the prices of the available legal supply, but consumers always go where there’s a deal.”- Jodie Emery
Progress Not Profits
For a plant that was supposed to be legalized for the health and well-being of the people, it seems there are millions of other reasons for its legalization. It is clear that many of those reasons are driven by financial profit. The high cost of getting by and getting high is on the rise in Canada, and if the legal Canadian cannabis industry wants to stop the black market and help advance health and wellness across the country, profit can’t be the main focus.
